Creative Vegetable Gardening with Kids
Vegetable gardening is an activity that is fun and relaxing for adults. It is one of the ways that adults unwind after a long day. However, adults aren’t the only ones who can benefit from vegetable gardening. Kids can have fun gardening but you have to get creative to keep them interested and entertained. One way to get creative is to have some type of theme associated with your vegetable garden.
Peter Rabbit Garden- A Peter Rabbit garden is based off the timeless classic “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” by Beatrix Potter. Peter Rabbit found certain vegetable so amazing that he risked Farmer McGregor seeing him and went against the wishes of his mother. You can plant radishes, carrots, lettuce, cabbage, parsnips, parsley, peas and cucumber. Give kids their own watering can to use in the garden along with a journal so they can keep track of the growth of their plants. Before you know it, it will be time to harvest your garden and make a huge pot of soup with all your vegetables.
Alphabet Garden- Planting a vegetable garden is not only a great way to teach children the alphabet but you can also design a fun themed garden by incorporating the alphabet into the garden. You can do this one of two ways. You can select vegetables that spell out each of your children’s names. For instance, a girl named BELLA could choose Broccoli, Eggplant, Lettuce, Leeks and Asparagus. A boy named BRENT might choose Beets, Radishes, Endive, Navy beans and Tomatoes. Another way to do this, especially if you are limited on space, is to plant a simple ABC garden. For an ABC vegetable garden you can plant Asparagus, Broccoli and Carrots.
Pizza Garden- Planting a pizza garden is a fun way to get kids involved. They will love being able to plant pizza ingredients and later making a pizza with these ingredients. You will need a stick, string, tomato plant, 3 different types of vegetable seeds such as onions, mushrooms and green peppers and 3 different types of herb seeds like parsley, basil and oregano. Mark off an area that you will use as your pizza garden. You want the area to be round so you can then divide it into seven segments that are wedge-shaped. This way the garden looks just like a real pizza. Three of the wedges will be vegetables, three will be herbs and one will be tomatoes.

Awesome ideas to keep children interested in gardening. I think gardening is a wonderful interest for children to see how everything grows and then to cook and eat it.
