How to Grow Spinach
Don’t think you can grow spinach? Well, here are some tips to grow the spinach you know and love.
Planting: Plant the spinach plants 12 inches apart in well drained rich soil to give room for the plant to reach full size. You can use fertilizers if you want to, the choice is yours. Plant your spinach for about 4 to 6 weeks and you should see it growing amazingly. Spinach plants prefer temperatures from 35 to 75 degrees to help it grow quicker. Some planter’s choice to plant spinach in the cold because they will be the first to produce an early spring harvest. Buy your spinach plants at your local plant shop or a decent store because in order to gain nice looking spinach you need decent plants that will grow season long with no problems.
Troubleshooting: Pest tend to enjoy spinach like flea beetles, spider mites, and aphids. They love to feed on the leaves which is the worst thing that could happen to your plants. Make sure to look out for diseases such as downy mildew and white rust, these can cause white spots on the leaves. Make sure to keep a look out every time you check up on your garden or when you need to water your garden. There are insects out there that can help your plants grow so make sure to study up on what is good or bad each one.
Harvest: Spinach leaves are ready to be harvested as soon as they are big enough to eat. Try to remove only the outer leaves and allow the center leaves to grow larger. This will help the center leaves produce more spinach and grow longer. In spring, when plants are about to bolt, pull the entire plant at once to enjoy the leaves before they become bitter. Enjoy your own grown spinach in your salads or any meals you have planned and feel happy you did it all on your own.
