Sometimes we get so busy in the kitchen that we often forget about maintaining our kitchen utensils. One kitchen utensils that we tend to get a whole lot of use of, yet never think about taking the time to condition them, is the wood cutting board.
More often than not, we often forget about conditioning our wood cutting boards and they end up looking dry, pale, and sometimes even crack. In order to extend the life of our wood cutting boards there is certain things that we must do.
Bringing life back to your cutting boards is not very hard, especially if you happen to have food grade oil on hand. Although olive oil is normally used to season cutting boards and even fry pans, it can go rancid over time. To remedy this, it is recommended that you use coconut oil. Coconut oil is anti-fungal, inexpensive, anti-microbial.
If you are looking to treat your wood cutting boards, it is important that you ensure that they are clean and dry. Take some of the coconut oil out of the jar and apply it to the board. If you prefer a more solid foundation, you can also freeze coconut oil. All you need to do is to add it to an ice cube tray and then place it in the freezer. When a half an hour has passed, the coconut oil will be solid enough for you to use.
Simply remove it from the ice cube tray and rub it over the surface of the wood cutting board, just as you would if you were waxing skis. Make sure that you rub it into all areas of the board. Take a clean, dry cloth and wipe it down to remove access oil. Allow the wood cutting board to sit for several hours before using it as this will give the oil a chance to soak into the wood.
You can repeat these actions every three to four weeks to keep your wood cutting boards in tip top shape and looking brand new.
