Dairy Free Milk Products You May Not Know About
If you need to or have chosen to follow a dairy free diet, you may think you have to give up milk. The good news is that you don’t have to. Here is a few dairy free milk products you may or may not know about.
Almond Milk– Almond milk is low-calorie and unsweetened. It is also dairy free with a mild yet smooth flavor. It is easy to make yourself at home by soaking 1 cup of raw almonds overnight in water. Then, rinse well, combine with 4 cups of coconut water, strain and store in the fridge.
Coconut Milk– Coconut milk features a strong coconut flavor along with a smooth and sweet flavor. This is not the same as the coconut milk in a can. This can also be made at home by combining 2 cups of boiling water and 1 cup of coconut flakes that are dried and unsweetened.
Rice Milk– Rice milk is totally dairy free with a gritty taste because of the rice pulp remnants. You can make this by boiling 1 cup of brown rice and 3 cups of water along with 1 teaspoon of honey and ½ teaspoon of cinnamon. After you cook the rice, put it in a blender with an additional 4 cups of water. Strain and store in the fridge.
Soy Milk– Soy milk became popular several years back when Starbucks debuted their soy lattes. Soy milk has a flavor that is smooth with a slight bean flavor. If you don’t make your own, look for brands of soy milk that is non-GMO and organic. If you choose to make your own, combine 3 cups of boiling with 1 cup of edamame, boil for 3 minutes, add to blender along with 1 teaspoon of ginger and 2 cups of water. Then, blend and strain and store in the fridge.
